Homemade dog food recipes?

I’m getting a new puppy and because of all the contaminated dog food scares I would like to find a good homemade recipe for my pooch. I Google it and there are so many different ones to choose and I guess i’m not to good on making decisions so does anyone from experience have a good recipe?

Personally I feed my dog raw but if you are looking for recipes for cooked meals, start with Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats or his website for recipes.

Is this a good recipe for homemade dog food?

I’ve recently decided to start cooking more homemade meals for my dog. What i do is this:

1. I cut meat into steak size pieces and fry for a few seconds on each side to kill bacteria.
2. After the meat is cooked I cut it into bite sized pieces.
3. I add boiled rice, the meat, some boiled carrots and turnips, half a cup of water and put it into a pot and slow cook it.
4. While everything is slow cooking I add a bit of ground up dry dog food and a couple of ground up doggie vitamins.
5. A few minutes before the food is done I add 1 or 2 egg yolks and mix it in well.

My dog really likes this food, but is this method ok? Am I missing any important ingredients? Or is anything I am adding harmful?
The egg is not raw, I add it a few mintues before I end the cooking process. By the time I take the food off the stove, the egg is fully cooked.

As important as *what* you’re putting (or not putting) into the food, is *how much* of each ingredient. “Some” doesn’t tell us anything. And “a couple of ground up doggie vitamins” doesn’t tell us anything. “1 or 2 egg yolks” means inconsistency. Do the vitamins contain calcium/phosphorus/Vit. D in the correct ratio? If not, that is the most obvious ingredient missing.

Get a more accurate measurement of all the ingredients, then contact your vet or a canine nutritionist to see what he thinks. I doubt that anyone here is capable of giving you a fair critique. If your dog will be on this food for years, it’s important that you get it right.

You might try googling “homemade dog food”, but just keep in mind that most sites contain the opinions of ONE person. That doesn’t make them right, even if they claim to have expert knowledge. In the end, rely on your own research and the advice of your vet.
