Jenny asks…

How do I train my dog to bark when someone comes to my house, but to stop barking when I tell him to?

I want to be able to call him off so that if a friend comes over, he will stop barking. He will not stop. I want him to bark when someone comes. Then stop barking if it is a friend and I say so. So can someone give me some kind tips on how to make him distinguish this? I want to say stop and have him stop. But I don’t want to cut out the barking totally. It is nice to know when someone comes over. thanks

admin answers:

Put him on a lead. When he continues to bark when you do not want it, you give a good jerk, put him in a sit/stay and give a command. I use *stand down*. Whatever you want. Just make it consistent.

Do it every time. Soon, he will learn when you give the command it is time to shut up.

Charles asks…

How do you train a dog not to bark at a young age so it does not get worse as it matures?

I do know that dogs do bark at times but not constantly is what I mean!

admin answers:

Well, my dog is trained to bark on command. And I also trained him to know the meaning of the word “no”. So, when I don’t want him to bark, I say “no bark”. 99 percent of the time he’ll stop. The only time he doesn’t is when he hears or apparently senses something is wrong.

Daniel asks…

Can dog owners train their dogs not to bark at walkers? If so, why not to it?

Most dogs ignore me or come up with tail wagging. Some dogs however run toward me barking loudly. I am not convinced that “Barking dogs don’t bite.” Moreover I have a heart condition and don’t need the excitement. In Canada it is against the law for a person to make threats to another. I don’t see why I should put up with it from a dog when I am walking for my health. Dog owners – if you have trained a dog to behave when out for a walk, please advise your fellow dog owners how to do it.

admin answers:

They really should stop their dogs from doing this. It is dangerous and a beginning sign of aggression. It is a sign of poor dog care if an owner allows this to go on. In fact, the dog and owner should leave the walkway, sit, and allow a walker to pass unobstructed. Some dogs are just more dominant than others by temperament. But if an owner refuses to control it and train the dog, then the owner is being neglectful. I always, always make take my golden off the walkway, have her sit and allow walkers to pass.
