Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Donald asks…

How do I get my dog to eat his food?

I found my dog a little less than a year ago. Someone just dropped him off on my street. My nana let me keep him. He wasn’t eating his dry food but he chowed down on the wet food. We switch him to kibbles and bits and he was doing really well but now he’s stop eating it. well he eats a few pieces a day. I’ve try mixing his dry food with the wet but he picks all the dry pieces out. I don’t know what to do. I was hope someone he would know what to do. He’s a Jack Russell Terrier he’s also mixed with a unknown dog. The vet says he’s 2 or 3 years old.
this is a photo of him. He’s name is Spike

We also dont have a lot of money to buy other dog food. He love table food. He was eating the food good until my nana started to feed him chips.
I put raw egg in it and he wont touch it.so now what do i do my mom wont buy more dog food untill he eats what hes got.

*Get a small can of wet dog food and mix a bit of water in with it and then it will form a healthy gravey and mix this in with his dry food. He will eat every bite. I have 8 dogs and they never leave any of their food. Never buy the dry dog food that makes gravy because they are very bad for dogs.

Mark asks…

How do I get my dog to eat food from his bowl?

He will eat his food only if i hand feed him. I have had him for a week now and he is 1 year old. He used to not eat at all and I had to spoon feed him because thats all that worked. Now i have to hand feed him and I have trried Tricks such as mixing food with canned food, peanut butter, water etc. He will eat it if i feed it from him but not the bowl.

It is as if he is afraid of the food bowl. The water and food bowls are identical except one is smaller. i Switched the water bowl with the food bowl as well but still he will drink water and won’t eat the food. Any suggestions on how to ween him towards feeding himself?

admin answers:

Put food in the bowl and leave it there for 15-30 minutes. If he doesn’t eat the food, take it away, and do the same thing for his next meal time. Your dog won’t starve himself, and will eat when he gets hungry enough, and will learn to eat from the bowl.

Sandra asks…

How can I get my dog to eat his food without doing these CRAZY antics?

I have a 5 year old chiuaua poodle mix- for some reason he doesn’t like to eat his food unless I hand feed him or my mother and I have to act like we’re going to eat his food- We have to get on our knees and act like were going to eat it or take it away from him. This just happend so randomly..He used to eat his food with no problems, now if we don’t hand feed him or pretend to eat the food, he will just lay by his food staring at it– but if we go by the food, he eats it. HOW CAN I MAKE HIM EAT NORMAL AGAIN?!

admin answers:

I agree that you are enabling his habits by performing these “CRAZY Antics”. You need to assert yourself as the boss in this case. Feed him normally, and pick up his food when he should be done. Then try to feed him again at the next feeding time. As an above poster said he will eat if there is nothing wrong with him after awhile.

My wife and I have a cat that gets like this, and he would only eat if someone is petting him. It was cute at first them it got old. He eats a special diet wet food for his digestion, and he was letting it go to waste if we didn’t do it. We finally stopped and just kept wetting down his dried food. After he went hungry for a day or two, he started eating normally.

Animals have personalities like people, they get finicky. They are also creatures of habit.

However, if this doesn’t work after a reasonable amount of time. You will need to consult a vet.

One other thought is that your dog may be food submissive (don’t think that is the term). Has he had an experience where eating was discouraged, maybe someone took his food aware in an aggressive manner? He could be frightened by something
