Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Lizzie asks…

How do I get my dog to eat slower and prevent choking?

My dog is becoming a potential threat to herself. At meal times she is eating her food too quick and not chewing. Due to this she is now choking herself nearly every other meal time. We have to stand in the kitchen and watch over her while she eats. If we’re lucky she will manage fine, other times we are not so lucky and me and my husband have to work together to help her. My husband has to hold her mouth open and I have to put my hand down her throat to dislodge all the food that is stuck. I’m now at my wits end with this as I’m 5mths pregnant and the further into pregnancy I go the more difficult it is going to be for me to get on my knees. Due to this I’m now very worried because I’m scared that my dog is actually going to kill herself choking. Please can somebody advise what I can do to try and prevent this from happening.
Thanks from a desperate dog owner

They make food balls where you can put the food in and the dog has to roll it around to get the food out. Or you could sprinkle little piles around the house so he has to find it. He still may not chew. If the food pieces are too big to swallow whole, maybe a food with smaller pieces will help. Good luck!

how do i get my dog to eat her food slower?

Did you ever talk to a vet about it? The only reason that i am asking is cause a friend of mine had a dog that would do that. She referred to it as she was eating like she was starving to death. She took it to the vet to see why and he said that she had some kind of stomach problem.

Maria asks…

Tips on making dog eat her food slower and be more gentle with food?

Okay, so I have a 2 yr old chocolate lab and a 7 yr old white english pit bull. Our pit bull takes her time while eating her food and is very gentle when being hand fed. Our chocolate lab on the other hand isn’t. When you are feeding her, for example, a piece of steak. She will almost bite your hand off trying to get to the food. And when she gets the food, she doesn’t even chew it, all she does is swallow. We’ve gotten her to where she’s a bit more gentle with receiving food, but she still just swallows it. I know the problem isn’t that she’s scared it’s going to get it taken away either because even when she’s all alone she still eats her food just as fast as she can. She’s also very healthy and gets more then her share of food. Any tips on how to make her eat her food slower and to be more gentle?

Thanks in advance :)

She is just food greedy. My dog done this and to save her swallowing large amounts in the one go i just make sure i break it up for her. Put a small amount in your hand and close your fist, let her smell it and she will probably lick your hand but don’t give her it til she sits or lies down and looks away, loses interest, then give her it. This way she will learn she doesn’t get to grab. Another way is to put a small piece on the floor and tell her to leave until you say she can have it, again waiting til she loses interest. It takes time but it helped my dog
