Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Betty asks…

My dog won’t eat?…..I’m desperate!?

He’s a 14 month old Rhodesian/Lab.I’ve made the huge mistake of mixing his food with table food. He’s been fed Nutro dry food since he’s been 3 months old and then I started giving some table food like an idiot and now it’s out of hand. Now he won’t eat anything! It’s been on and off like this for a month or so. I have to coherse him to eat. I’ve tried mixing vegetable/peanut oil with no luck! Let’s put this way I’ve tried everything but I want him to go back to his food! Soft canned food he won’t even sniff! He’s received all the vaccines and heart worm, parasite, and flea pills etc. for the year. He’ll eat dog cookies and every treat you can think of and he loves pieces of cheese and drinks plenty of water. So I know he’s not sick! His bodily functions are normal. He’s alert, energetic, active and he’s not lethargic. I don’t want to take to the vet just yet because she’ll tell me off for one and charge an arm and a leg for something I know I’ve created. What do I do? Suggestions?Help!

admin answers:

No, just leave his kibble out. That’s it. He will eat when he’s hungry. It may take a few days, but oh well. As long as he’s still drinking water, he will be fine. He doesn’t eat it because he’s learned that eventually, you cave and give him the good stuff.
It’s time for some tough love, hun

Daniel asks…

I got my dog spayed today. She is very lethargic, shakes when she breathes, and won’t eat. Normal?

I am worried about my labrador retriever. I got her spayed today and she has some symptoms that worry me. Are those symptoms normal?

admin answers:

Some dogs will opt to eat after surgery; others will refuse. Upset stomach is common after general anesthesia, so offering a bland homemade dog food like rice with plain, skinless chicken or boiled hamburger meat will encourage eating while preventing stomach upset.

Recovery time is about 14 days in a female dog who’s just been spayed. So, in your dog’s case, she is still in the recovery process. Don’t worry, soon she’ll be back to normal.

Helen asks…

My dog won’t eat or drink?

I’ve read all the other questions but none of them seems to be informational enough.

My dog is a one year old chihuahua and he isn’t eating or drinking. He was just fine yesterday, he was running around but today he’s kind of lethargic and not eating or drinking. We just had to force feed him some water to keep him hydrated. Is he sick? We might think it’s the weather since we live in California and the weathers just recently skyrocketed. Any ideas?
His nose is dry and he keeps napping. As for his stool, he only went once this morning and it was solid and dark.

admin answers:

I wouldn’t be as concerned if he wasn’t eating but since he’s not drinking either that is concerning, especially in a small dog. Is there anything he could have got into and chewed up since he is still a puppy? He should probably go in for an x-ray to make sure he doesn’t have an obstruction in his stomach. Better safe than sorry.
