Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Helen asks…
What food can cause allergies to dogs?
I’m curious because my brother said that dogs and cats are allergic to chocolate… can you tell me other foods that cause allergies and what might happen to the dog if it eats the food?

admin answers:
To clarify, dogs are not allergic to chocolate. Chocolate is bad because their livers cannot process the theobromine that’s in the chocolate. The main culprits of food allergies in dogs are grains, like corn and wheat. Those grains are in the dog foods sold at grocery stores and places like Walmart. Usually what happens when a dog eats those grains and has an allergic reaction, they itch quite a bit.

John asks…
Dog foods for dogs with food Allergies?
So, I’m guessing my dog is having allergy problems with his dog food. We Used to feed him Solid Gold, and he never had problems before, but It got a little expensive. Right now, we’ve been feeding him Science Diet Lamb & Rice Large breed [Which I don't like feeding him] and He is having reactions! He’s been getting ear infections, and skin issues as seen here:

What do you suggest for dog foods to feed him? I have a Co-Op down the road, as Well as a Petco. I trust the Co-Op More, they sell Solid Gold, Wellness, Nutro, Canidae, Hollistic Select, Blue Seal, and a few others.
Any suggestions for my boy?

admin answers:
It depends what your dog is allergic to.
Many people suggest chicken to dogs with allergies, but it doesn’t work well if you find your dog is allergic to it (this can hold true for ANY ingredient).
It’s either going to have to be trial and error on your part, or simply pay up the money to get allergy testing done (8 types of food later I had to break down and do that).
Personally my dog gets TimberWolf Organics: Dakota Bison formula if you would like to give that a shot.

Paul asks…
What is the best kind of food for a dog with allergies?
I have a dog who is constantly licking his paws. I heard that this might be caused by a food allergy. What in dog food would most likely cause this? What is the best kind of food that I should give him instead?

admin answers:
The best food is one that he is not allergic to.
I don’t mean to sound silly, but an allergy could be caused by ANYTHING. The fact that he is licking his paws indicates to me that it is more likely to be a contact allergy, i.e. Something he walks on.
See a vet.
