Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Carol asks…

My dog’s stomach is growling, and he won’t eat his food. What’s wrong?

He will eat grass, but I can’t get him to eat his food. I even put some meat and peanut butter next to his food bowl, but he won’t eat either of those.

How long do I wait before I call the vet? Anyone had a similar problem with their pet, and what did you do?

admin answers:

Most likely he just ate something that’s making his tummy upset. Dogs eat all sorts of things off the ground. If he’s still drinking water and passing stool, a day without eating isn’t going to hurt him. Take him to the vet if:
He doesn’t drink water for 24 hours
He doesn’t poop in 24 hours
He vomits up something solid more than once
He has been around other sick dogs lately or been to a dog park without having his shots

Most of all, trust your gut! If he seems really “off”, take him to the vet. Better to be out some money than to have something tragic happen

Chris asks…

How can I make my French Bulldog eat his food?

Hi,

My French Bulldog had a stomach problem when he was about 3 months old. I took him to the vet and about a month afterwards he was just fine :) .

He is 6 months old right now, but unfortunately since he was sick he has not been eating correctly. He just eats once or twice a day (not eating all of his food), or sometimes can go a whole day without eating anything. I’ve changed his dog food several times, thinking that it’s because he doesn’t like it. I’ve tried mixing in canned dog food with his usual dog food which he will eat sometimes but after a couple of days just treat it the same as his normal food and probably ignore it. I’ve also left his food down 10 minutes and then pick it up until the next meal, but he also doesn’t care (I still do this BTW). I have NEVER given him any human food, btw.

I know he really need to eat in order to grow as a healthy dog but I simply just can’t get him to eat properly. Any tips? Something I’m missing? Thanks :)
He has LOTS of excercise and I take him to the vet constantly. Both of us have not figured out what to do.
He’s eating Royal Canin for Puppies. He also ate Science Diet for puppies before, and he had to eat Royal Canin Hypoallergenic for about a month when he was sick to his stomach. I live in Bogota, Colombia so we don’t have a lot of variety in Premium Dog Food :( .

I know this sounds a little crazy but some dogs are just very picky or want to use their food to get more attention. So I would try spoon feeding him or maybe warming the food up a bit. I have to do both to get my dog to eat. I hand feed plain dry food to him for the frist year of his life. Then we started using wetfood too. And then I spoon fed it to him. Try it, it’s annoying but with some dogs it’s the only way.

Daniel asks…

How do I get my dog to eat on his own?

My german shepard will not eat his food unless you sit in a chair next to his bowl while he eats how do I make this stop?

admin answers:

Offer the food, and pick it up after 20 minutes and don’t offer it again til the next feeding time. He’ll soon learn to eat what he’s given or else it will be gone!
