Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Carol asks…
My dog won’t eat dry food and gets sick when she eats regular dog food help!?
Everytime I feed my dog regular dog food she eats it but gets really sick (diarrhea) so I tried switching to dry food and now she doesn’t eat anything I feel so bad because I don’t know what to feed her and I feel as if I’m starving her! She’s not eating anything now and is starting to get constipated. I’ve tried like a million different dog food brands but they all make her sick. I’ve also tried different dry food brands to see if she likes them better but she doesn’t. What do i do???

Try soaking her kibble in hot water, leave it to cool and then offer it to her. Soaking will bring out the flavour and the smell may tempt her to eat it. You could sprinkle a spoonful of grated cheese on her food. Dogs love cheese and this may get her tastebuds going. Be careful that you don’t add too much extra protein to the dry food though. You don’t want to upset the balance as it has been specially formulated to provide your dog with all the nutriments and vitamins it needs for its growth and bone.
Try not to keep changing her food. Too many different foods will give her diarrhoea. If you find a good food then stick with it and don’t be tempted to offer her anything else. Just get her into a good feeding routine. Put her bowl down and if she hasn’t eaten the food within 15 minutes, pick it up and then make her wait until her next meal is due. She will eat if she is hungry, believe me.
Be firm with her and don’t allow her to become a fussy eater.
When you do introduce a new food do it very gradually by mixing a small amount in with the food she has been having so as to not cause too much trauma to her digestive system.
Good luck.

Linda asks…
Dog won’t eat new food…?
I have a three year old female Chihuahua, and I just got her new food because she seemed to be tired of her old food. She won’t touch her new food. She does get a lot of treats, mostly from my father. She will eat human food, like turkey or chicken [that she mooches from my father], but I want her to eat her own food. What should I do if she won’t eat her new food (I don’t have money to buy her new food right now)? Any tips to get her to eat her own food (it’s dry food by the way, Eukanuba, I don’t have a ton of money to spend on dog food)?

The dog will eat nothing until the treats are stopped. A chihuahua is a very small dog, weight between 5 and 10 pounds usually. The calorie requirements for a dog at perfect weight is 15 calories per pound per day. So if your dog SHOULD weigh 5 pounds, she only needs 75 calories of food per day. If she SHOULD weigh 10 pounds, that is only 150 calories per day. Guess what….she is probably getting more calories than that from those treats! No wonder she ‘tired’ of the old food and won’t eat the new! Tell your dad that the chihuahua is off limits to him until he can learn to put food in only his mouth, nobody elses. Mix the old food with the new food gradually, taking a week to make the switch over. Your father is killing the dog with love. People food is NOT balanced, she will have all sorts of problems with her teeth, skin, bones, etc if she continues to eat the people food and the treats. Tell your Dad I said to stop! And any other vet will back me up on this.

Ruth asks…
Why won’t my dog eat her dog food?
We’ve tried various types of dog food and she just won’t eat it. She just smells it then leaves it alone. She only eats it when she really goes hungry and knows that there aren’t any other food that she could eat. Are there other types of food that we could feed her? She is almost 8 months old.
PS. My mom was the one who kept changing the food. Not me.

Most dog foods aren’t that great for your dog, and your dog most likely knows that. The brands you get at the supermarkets and most regular pet stores leave a lot to be desired and contain a lot of corn and soy, which are not very good for dogs and can lead to dry coat, kidney problems, hot spots, etc. Not-so-great brands include Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro.
Decent brands include Wellness, Blue Buffalo.
Very good brands include Orijen, Eagle Pack, Evo, and Merrick.

Nothing is better for your dog than a raw or home-made diet. I make my dog’s food and it takes about 15 minutes a week for a 50 lb. Dog.
My dog was avoiding dog food and it turns out the dog food was making him sick… He had an intolerance to the hardeners in almost all kibbles. He knew it, it made him sick and his stomach hurt, and he didn’t want it. He’s better now that I make his diet.
