Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Daniel asks…
My dog won’t eat regular dog food?
I have a dog Shih Tzu. He is a male . He is a 2 year and 1 month old. When he was just a puppy he eats regular + rice + water without any problems. Now when he was a 1 year old. we put away the rice. He eats a little bit though. Now 1 year and a half we put away the water. Now he doesn’t eat anymore. We put regular food with no water and rice and he will just smell it and just lay down. We feel sad about him. We let him out and he feels energetic. Now hes a 2 year old we let im breed to anoher cross-breed dog. He is very excited at that part and hes more energetic than before. After that hes kinda sad and do nothing. I don’t wanna be that way. I put water + regular dog food and still nothing. Hes not doing ANYTHING . just lay down and do the poor eyes. He still doesn’t eat. I thought he was gonna die without eating.
He loves wet food. But we wanna learn him to eat regular food !
Any helpful tips?
Mostly people suggest that dont give any wet food and leave it to their cages the dry food. They will go hungry and dont get poor at those eyes.Just let them eat it.
I want him to learn to eat dog food. When he heard a cat saying MEOWWW or a car HonK HONK he will bark so loud that we all woke up. He always eat when we add some people food. But it said dont share your people food with the dogs. Not only it will upset your dog‘s balanced diet ( canines’ nutritional needs are different from humans ) but it might also give your pup behavioral problems.

You NEVER EVER bred mixed breed dogs- my gods they euthanize thousands of them every year! Get him neutered and that may help.
If you think he is sick, have the vet check him out. Do not give him any people food at all or treats. Mix a little wet food w/ the dry as a “gravy” & put his food down & leave it for about 15 minutes. If he does not eat it, take it up and offer it again in a couple hours. Same thing- leave it down 15 minutes then take it up. Sometimes exercise will stimulate the appetite, so take him for a walk or go play w/ him. It may take a day or two, but do not give in & the dog will not die. He should have fresh water at all times. When he starts eating, praise him. Gradually reduce the amount of canned food every couple days until it is gone. Do not give in to the sad eyes!

my dog won’t eat the food i buy for her?
when i first got her she was on advance puppy food, the dude and the vet said to only feed her the dry food but after a while she wouldn’t eat it anymore and started eating my cats tin food, so i thought to buy advance puppy tin food she ate it for a while but stopped then i tried my dog and again liked it then wouldn’t eat it then i tried natures gift or something like that and again won’t eat it and then 2 days ago my mum bought this like meat stuff from the pet shop and it was $25 and she just walked away now i have like 10 tin food cans of this dog food that is gonna go to waste ( maybe i should ask my cousin and see if her dog likes it) and again my mum bought this other brand she licked is and walk away, i have tried like 6 different food brand ( from the best down to super market brands) she she won’t eat them, what should i do? i don’t want her to be hungry should i only give her the advance dry food and nothing else? or do u know any other brands ( that are sold in Australia) can i could try?
could i make my own dog food? like raw chicken or beef or something?

There are two things you can do:
You can be mean to your dog and make him eat the plain dog food by taking away everything and only offer the dog food at meals times and then he will eat the food but he will not be happy.
Would you be happy if everyday someone fed you something you didn’t like but you ate it anyways because it was all you were offered and if you didn’t eat it you’d go hungry til your next meal. I didn’t think so. This method does work but my dogs have gone one strike once to prove a point that they didn’t like the dog food. Got so bad they didn’t eat for two days and had to go the Vet and she recommended changing the food or adding chicken broth or something to make the food more interesting.
Dogs have perferences and one of the hardest things is finding out what their perferences are. Some people just think that dog’s can;t taste but they actually can and so they do develop taste to things. First, ask your vet exactly how much dog food you should be giving your dog and how often. If he is eating less than he should then the best thing to do is to disguse their (appropriate amount of food for the meal) with things like a bit of shredded grilled or baked chicken or even a bit of cat food, (ask your vet first, we had a dog that LOVED cat food so we asked our vet and she was all for us mixing a handful of cat food into two cups of dry dog food and then mixing it up and then scooping out servings for the dog so the dog food tasted like cat food. Over time we weaned him off of dog food/cat food mix and now he eats only dog food, now that he is older.)
It’s like with kids, when they refuse to eat, you make meal time fun and you make the food more interesting and what do you know they eat it and they enjoy it. You really will see a happy dog when meal time is something to look forward as good, and not as something that frustrates them.
The point is to make the food tantalizing to the dog. What dog really refuses chicken juices, or gravy, or chicken bits? Not many. So you make the food more interesting and they will eat it. Work with things he likes and doesn’t refuse to eat. Ask your vet before adding things to the dog’s diet, but there are many “human things” that the dog CAN have.
Things you can add: Just coat the food lightly, to add a bit of flavor to it.
Chicken juice or broth
beef broth or gravy
brown gravy
add pieces of cooked chicken or beef or tuna, shredded and mixed well in the food
add wet dog foods
crush up dog treats like (Milkbone treats) and evenly mix the powder in the dog’s food.
One thing we did and it worked wonderfully (ask your vet first) was we add baby food meats (chicken, beef, ham, turkey) with some water and mixed it all with the dry dog food. (These are usually high protein and free from perservatives and usually very safe and easiest to add to the dog’s food. Also, it’s very tempting to dogs they love it).
Or for fun look up dog food recipes and just make your own. Some of these recipes you find on the web are really nice easy to make and very healthy for picky eater dogs.
That is just a few things we used with our dog’s but there are many other things you can do to get your puppy to eat their food. Making the food more interesting to trick your dog into eating it is better than letting your dog go hungry it is not good for puppy’s to go without food for long time.
If your dog still refuses to eat then you need to consult your Vet because there could be an underlining problem she needs to check out like ulcers, or parasites.
The number one cause of puppy’s refusing to eat is usually when they are sick or when they find their dog food boring and nasty.
Good luck!
Tip* When you have to give your puppy any kind of medience best thing is to put the pill in some cheese just enough to cover the pill up and give it. A small amount of cheese is safe for giving pills, or you can use a teaspoon of vanilla pudding to mix liquid meds, (always ask Vet if meds can be given with foods, some can not).

Susan asks…
My dog won’t eat anymore, HELP!?
I have two dogs, a three year chihuahua named Samson and a one year old Miniature American Eskimo named Bukowski. I have been feeding my dogs “Taste of the Wild” a high protein brand of food since I got Samson years ago.
Recently Bukowski, the mini Eskimo, has completely stopped eating his food and I am really unsure why. He is still playful and energetic but refuses to eat his dog food. He is not on medication and according to his vet check up a few months ago, is a very healthy dog.
I am really worried because now you can feel he is loosing weight. Why is he suddenly not eating, what can I do to get him to eat again. Please please help.
(Samson is still completely healthy and is still eating his food.)
Bukowski likes the flavor of the food, its been the same since he was really young, this is new..

Your dog needs to see the vet as someone else said he may just be bored of his food but it could be something altogether more serious. A highly flavorful food might get him to start eating again, at my work (i am a veterinary nurse) if an animal wont eat we try them on hills canine a/d diet they seem to love the taste of it! Or a little bit of cat food might go down a treat or some cooked chicken. But definitely see your vet aswell!!!
