Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Lisa asks…

How do you get a dog to eat dog food if they would rather starve than eat anything other than human food?

I have a 7 year old shih-tzu. When she was a pup, she became allergic to her food and we had to change it. After a VERY short time, she just stopped eating completely. Despite knowing how harmful human food was for her, I could not stand to see her not eat, so I started giving her things such as chicken breast. As I said, I am aware of how harmful human food is, and I would LOVE to get her to eat dog food. Does anyone have any ideas for how to go about this? I’ve tried in the past, and she has gone for 4 days without eating, so I give in and give her human food again. Thanks!

Whatever your dog is eating now,get some canned dogfood and mix in with her dry food.It doesn’t take very much and she will eat her food.ADD;My dog is allergic to dogfood and he gets venison and rice and loves it.They digest it very well and that helps cut down on gas as well..

George asks…

how to get my dog to eat dog food?

We have a very fussy boston who will not eat dog food. She was fed fresh meat (chicken etc), but we have had to stop that as she was putting on weight, and we were worried she was not getting the right nutrients. We have followed the vets advice about putting it down for 20 mins then removing it, but are getting worried as she is refusing to eat for 3-4 days at a time. The vet says she is healthy and wont starve herself, but it is a constant worry when she wont eat. Any ideas of how we can get her to eat her dog food?

admin answers:

The vet is correct. She will not starve herself. Just don’t give in and let her win… That only teaches her that she is in control. If it makes you feel better you could add some canned food to her dish. If that works, and you don’t want to continue that habit forever, you just slowly wean her off the canned food by adding less and less each feeding.

Carol asks…

Why won’t my dog eat REAL food?!?

he won’t eat. Well that’s what I thought anyways… UNTIL on an impulse I gave him canned food (gross I know), and he ate it.
(Tears are coming to my eyes, after all that effort…)
His “normal” food is a mix of Premium mince, carrot, dog multivitamin and dry dog food.
Now, this CRAP I had for an emergency is what it will eat!
ALSO, my other people eats his “real” food but wants to eat 3/4 of that then eat some of my others puppies food regardless of what it is.
So, the question is how do I get my pup to eat “real” food?
AND how do I deter my other puppy from eating the starving puppies food?
(BTW they are both 8 week old Jack Russell pups (M), the one who doesn’t eat is ALOT smaller then the other. THey are both wormed, vaccinated and to be fleaed tomorrow AND the vet checked them both today and they are healthy)
Carrots prevent diorrhea and constipation in dogs, and a common misconception is that dogs are carnivores, well they are omnivores.
So, that’s why I would feed him carrots.

FOOD FACTS:

* Give your dog healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables: apple slices, carrot sticks, orange segments, banana slices, and frozen vegetables are all canine favorites.
* It’s okay to give your dog a little bite of what you had for dinner.
* Some foods aren’t good for dogs and can cause serious health problems. These include chocolates, onions, raisins, grapes, tomatoes, caffeinated beverages, garlic, walnuts, macadamia nuts, cooked bones (chicken, turkey, pork, beef)
* Feed your dog at the same time every day.
* Always feed your dog in his bowl
* Make sure what you buy is high in protein, not grain-based, and that it’s AAFCO-tested. The AAFCO, the American Association of Feed Control Officials, is a watchdog group that sets food-testing and labeling standards.
