Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Mandy asks…
What is the best way to train a dog? A couple questions.?
The training is mostly about tircks like stay, sit, roll over, pray, etc…
Do you know any good websites? How old is too old to train a dog? Also can you give me some advice to help me make the dog go to the restroom outside?
I want my dog to be all about love and I’m afraid if I send it to a school it will come back in military discipline mode. Can you please comment on this?
Thanks 10 points for the best answer.

I always train my own dogs. First on the bathroom issue using a kennel really helps put the dog in one when you sleep or are at work etc. They learn to hold it they do not want to sleep where they pee. When you are at home take him out a lot I have found that giving them a treat whenever they poop outside helps too like the little snausages praise them when they use outside clap and all that stuff when they do go inside the house make sure to tell them no there is no need to rub their face in it they will catch on soon. You will want to house break a dog when it is young it is better less and smaller messes to clean. I got a 2 year old lab and he learned very fast with no problems on sit and come I don’t bother with the roll over I have no idea how to teach that. I think it is better for the owner to train the dog since you are the one they are going to be listening too. You might want to try the classes they have at petsmart etc. That has you and your dog together.

Mark asks…
how do you train a dog to…?

There are several methods…here are a few links, read up and decide which method is best for you:

I personally use a similar method as the last link;
I use a treat to lure my dog into that position and then I use a clicker to bridge between the command (play dead) and the reward (treat/good boy)
good luck, be patient, it really is a useful trick to have come time to visit the vet

John asks…
How do you teach a dog to sit, stand and roll over?
I have a West Highland Terrier and he’s about 6 months old. We’ve practically potty trained him, but I want to know how to teach to sit and all that stuff…I know you use a lure and stuff, but…..JUST HELP ME OUT

Put them through the motions physically, say the command word (sit, stand, roll over, whatever word you want to use) and reward them with praise and treats as soon as they finish the motion.
Like, press down on their hind-quarters to make them sit down. Eventually stop using your hand, and do not give them any treat or praise until they complete the action on their own. If they don’t, try again using your hand.
For stand, you can hold something, even if its just a toy, over their head. Say “Stand” or whatever word you want to use. When they stand for the toy/treat/your hand, give a lot of praise.
For roll over, make the dog lay down. I’m not going into an explanation of teaching lay, as this is getting long enough already. With the dog laying down, put your hand on his back so he can’t stand up. Move the treat around his head, and he may try to follow it by rolling over.
An alternate way to teach sit is to show the dog a treat is in your hand. Close your hand around the treat (make it something really good to keep their attention). Say “Sit!” Don’t let them have it, just keep it in front of his face. Eventually, he may sit down out of frustration. When he does, immediately give the treat and praise.
There is a lot of good training information online which helped me when I trained my dog. If none of this works, you could also look into clicker-training. Try searching for it, there is a lot of information on that also.
You can also use dog food as treats with most dogs. It will keep down expenses on treats and keep the dog from having a ton of treats per day.
