Your Questions About [get Your Dog To Eat]

Lisa asks…
How do I train my dog to stop biting people?
I adopted a foster dog from the shelter. He is a rescue dog from a house of 25 other dogs and my home was his first experience being a “pet”.
He is a very loving dog, and a perfect pet to my family. However, when people come to the house he freaks out. We will calm him down, but he will follow the guests around and snap at them when he can. I can’t figure out what his problem is or what to do about it. The other day he snipped at a two year old girl, who was not threatening him at all.
He is two years old and a mid sized dog, a little bigger than a cocker spaniel.
Please help!
thanks!

Snap him on the nose with a rolled up newspaper when he does it. Negative response teaches them.

Scream ow whenever he bites you, and then turn away from him momentarily so he understands that when he bites someone he will lose their attention. There are many ways that you can train a dog to stop biting, but I don’t believe in physical FORCE to stop them. It’s cruel.

Okay, I’m a dog trainer & this always makes me laugh…because honestly when they are tiny we let them do it because they don’t bite hard and it really is kind of cute. Then they do this growing up thing…what’s that about?
Anyway when your dog does this don’t scream and flail around just simply say , “sit” it she doesn’t know this command just say it and then push her behind in the sit position. When this is attain simply say, “no bite, no, no, no, no bite”, if she continues through this to try and bite take her head under the chin, not hard but stern enough so you have control of her attention. This will make her pay attention, and repeat the no, no thing. If she is still trying to bite take the top jowl on both sides and pinch it just to keep the mouth shut with the bottom lip. Then repeat the no,no,thing. If you don’t yell and just sternly and slowly say it…she will catch on. Be consistant…but also be patient. She has learned that she can do it, so this is a bit of “reteaching” she should have it in a matter of just a few days. Good luck love.
